No.47 "Damilola family condemn Hague remarks" (The Times, 18:59 MONDAY DECEMBER 18 2000)
Tory leader William Hague stood accused tonight by the parents of murdered schoolboy Damilola Taylor of using their son’s death as a political football.
Mr Hague had appeared to link Damilola’s murder to lower police numbers and poor morale among the Metropolitan Police
Mr Hague was singled out for criticism by the family of the dead boy, but tonight he insisted that he would not be ”bullied” into letting the issue of police numbers and morale drop.
Earlier, Tony Blair’s official spokesman had cautioned politicians against entering into such a sensitive arena.
He said: ”The people who are responsible for Damilola Taylor’s death are the people who killed him. Politicians should think pretty carefully before diving into ongoing murder investigations.”
The Leader of the Opposition was foolish in the extreme to link his general assault on the Government's policy on crime with an individual case, that of the murder of Damilola Taylor, particularly when the grief of the Taylor family was still so raw.
