名高いコラムニストArt Buchwaldのコラム"Teen Angle"（Los Angeles Times Syndicate Thursday, August 19, 1999）に見る二人の十代の若者の会話である。
One said to the other, "Did you hear what they both said? They said, 'Good morning.' "
The other girl replied, "My parents always say 'Good morning.' It doesn't mean anything."
"But if we answered them it would start a conversation."
"Don't answer and they will know we don't want to talk."
"I'm hungry."
"We can eat without saying anything. They have to feed us. It's the law."
Buchwaldの創作かもしれないと思わせる出来の良さだが、いかにも、という会話である。この世の終わりの朝にもきっと交わすことになる"Good morning."なのだから、この言葉に格別の《意味》はなく、一定の《働き》しかない。若者二人の交わす会話に格別の《意味》はなく、一定の《働き》しかないのと同じである。しかも、彼女たちは気付いていまいが、いずれの《働き》もほぼ等価である。
狭苦しい押入に閉じこもっている彼女たち（"We can eat without saying anything. They have to feed us. It's the law."）にはポルフィーリがラスコーリニコフに向けた言葉を贈ろう。
"What you need now is fresh air, fresh air, fresh air!"
